How far can anyone go?

Forget what is realistic. Suppose one person learned language after language, always choosing the one that reaches the most new people, building a tower of Babel in reverse. Watch where each floor takes them.

The colour key: a wheel of language families

Every family sits on the rim; the Indo-European branches (English, Spanish, Russian, Hindi, Persian…) are cousins, so they cluster in one warm arc. A country's colour is the blend of its languages; the more it has, the deeper the shade and the closer its dot sits to the centre.

Fifty-nine languages, a lifetime of study, and the tower still stops at 97%. The last couple hundred million people speak the other 7,100 languages of the world. The tower has no roof.
